Sleeping Beauty was premiered at the Gates Auditorium as part of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival on July 17 and was met with unbridled enthusiasm!
An insider from the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival reported the following: "It was a huge success...This year, an enthusiastic and energetic young coach/conductor from the SF area, Ming Luke, lead preparation and his positive energy was infectious. He loves the opera did a marvelous job of educating the singers about all the source material from which the numbers have been drawn....
The kids have been rehearsing very hard. Our SB, Prince, Fairy Godmother, and Bad Fairy are all fabulous young singers, 17 and 18 yrs old, who have distinguished themselves in various national high school singing competitions. Our Prince sounds just like a young Suzie Mentzer and the SB is singing the Rondine aria more beautifully than I've heard it sung even at Met Western Regional Finals. Better yet, all the small parts are being approached with respect and seriousness, right down to the chorus parts, which no one is taking for granted. The chorus sings with gusto and commitment. This has been an amazing learning experience for these kids. "
